I've a long record in editorial work in book and magazine publishing, starting 1974, a variety of other work experience, but have been, since 2001, recurringly housebound with insanely painful sporadic and unpredictably variable gout and edema, and in the past, other ailments; the future? The Great Unknown: isn't it for all of us?
I'm currently house/cat-sitting, not on any government aid yet (or mostly ever), often in major chronic pain from gout and edema, which variably can leave me unable to walk, including just standing, but sometimes is better, and is freaking unpredictable at present; I also have major chronic depression and anxiety disorders; I'm currently supported mostly by your blog donations/subscriptions; you can help me. I prefer to spread out the load, and lessen it from the few who have been doing more than their fair share for too long.

I/P DOESN'T ONLY MEAN "INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY." Why, yes, I would like to see slash fiction where Israel and Palestine learn to make love to each other, although probably this should not be a bondage/domination relationship.
But that is not my topic. This is a decent look at Hamas in 2005.
While the ups and downs and pros and cons of Ariel Sharon are now a moot political question and of little current political relevancy, but have moved as an issue into the column of history, this interview with Ari Shavit about his (non-online) New Yorker piece on Sharon is nonetheless good, and largely expresses my own view of Sharon. Nutshell: I spent most of my life mostly hating and despising Sharon, but he did some good things, limited as they were, in his last years, and deserves credit for that.
Meanwhile, Khaled Meshal is willing to compromise and only see Israel destroyed slowly.
Meshal also told a news conference in Damascus that Hamas will honor commitments made by the Palestinian Authority to Israel, provided they serve Palestinian interests, despite the group's refusal to recognize Israel.
"We are willing to form an army like every country ... an army to defend our people against aggression," Meshal said after the group's sweeping victory in Palestinian elections.
He said the proposed new force, if formed, would not let its agenda be dictated by Israel's security needs. Hamas's charter calls for the destruction of Israel.
Asked whether Hamas would consider amending its charter and respect agreements the Palestinian Authority had signed with Israel, Meshaal said: "We will honor our Palestinian commitments provided that it serves our people."
"We will not recognize the Israeli occupation but we are realistic and we know things are done gradually ... Being against occupation does not mean I can cancel Israel in moments."

Mashaal indicated that his group would continue attacks on Israeli civilians as long as Palestinian civilians were targeted by Israel.
"As long as we are under occupation then resistance is our right," he said.
"Resistance is a legitimate right that we will practice and protect. Our presence in the legislature will strengthen the resistance," he said.
"If people raised the issue of targeting civilians, we said and we say that when our enemy stops targeting civilians we will abide by that," Meshal said.
Which, I have to say, is quite interesting phrasing. What, I have to wonder, is his precise definition of "when our enemy stops targeting civilians"?
[...] Asked if a truce that ended at the end of 2005 will be renewed, Meshal said "it results were not encouraging."
Meshal then outlined Hamas' three goals: Reform of the Palestinian Authority, sustaining its resistance to Israel and "arranging the Palestinian home."

He declared Hamas' determination to reshape the Palestinian authority, coining the phrase: "Hamas succeeded in resistance and it will succeed in reforms."
In an apparent reference to the ruling Fatah Party, Meshal warned those "who might try block the work because they are out of power. They are the ones who will be responsible."
This seems to be rather an incomplete quote: responsible for what?
[...] Ghazi Hamad, one of Hamas' top ideologues, said on Saturday that Hamas may consider forming a government of technocrats with no connection to the radical Islamic movement, in a bid to relieve some of the international pressure on the group.
"We want a government for the Palestinian people, and if we couldn't do that then there are lots of options, one of which is a technocrat government," Hamad said.
An obvious move; I assumed they would at least make several technocrat Cabinet appointments, and that continues to be my assumption; these guys are not stupid, and they have a pretty close grasp of their grass roots and the masses, and know they can't project an image of non-stop religious fanaticism and hope to succeed.
Hamas is also, inevitably, reacting to the threats of cutting off or using the international aid that is the lifeblood of the PA:
"This aid can not be a sword over the heads of the Palestinian people and will not be material to blackmail our people, to blackmail Hamas and the resistance," senior Hamas leader Ismael Haniyeh said
He added that Hamas was committed to keeping its arms and fighting Israel.

"Hamas has many alternatives [for aid], there is much good within our people and we have the Arab world and we also have all those who love the oppressed peoples in the world and who stand beside us," Haniyeh said.
He made no specific suggestion as to other countries that could provide aid.
Hard to say how much of this is bluster, but I suspect a great deal, while some is sincere; how long such a stance would be maintained in face of a suddenly dry well-spring remains to be seen.
A Hamas lawmaker, Yehya Musa, told Reuters the movement was considering whether to send a delegation to tour Arab, Islamic and some European countries to explain the group's position.
Probably a good idea. Best to figure out a position first, though.

Some diehards will never, of course, surrender what is their core religious belief; how many Hamas supporters are such, and how many are merely softcore supporters who like their lack of corruption, social services, and ability to resist Fatah as much as Israel, remains to be seen, but I suspect there are, even now, more of the latter than the former, and that the proportions will continue to shift in that direction in years to come; if not, then they can defect to a reformed Fatah, if we're lucky, and the pendulum will swing back to a Fatah that regains control.
Don't count on that happening in less than six or so years, though. Fatah is a big sluggish killer shark, and will turn slowly, though it must keep moving, or die.
In an official response to a global commemoration of the Holocaust, the Iranian mission to the United Nations dispatched a letter to the General Assembly president last week which called for "scientific scrutiny and rigor" to determine the veracity of the Nazi genocide against European Jewry.
The Iranian document, a copy of which was obtained by Haaretz, accuses Israel of "routinely attempt[ing] to exploit the suffering of the Jewish people in the past as a cover for its crimes being perpetrated against Palestinians in the occupied territories, including massacres, demolition of houses, properties and farmland as well as acts of state terrorism."
In the letter, the Iranians urge the international community "not [to] allow the Zionist regime to manipulate humanitarian sentiments to pursue its illegitimate goals."
"Addressing an historical event of horrifying enormity, with the view towards avoiding its reoccurrence, requires a commensurate degree of scientific scrutiny and rigor," the letter, which was unsigned and dated January 23, states.
"Rendering political judgement of such an event and closing the door to any scientific inquiry on their characteristics, scope, and extent would seriously undermine the sincerity of the endeavor, particularly in its preventive aspect," it said.
"The basic principle of democracy, including the right of freedom of expression and belief, should pave the way for exploring different aspects of historical events without any arbitrary restriction," the letter reads. "Moreover, genocide and immense suffering should not be manipulated for political purposes."
Kinda hard to sort this out. There was "genocide and immense suffering," and "an historical event of horrifying enormity," after all? Have Supreme Leader Ali Khamanei and that nice Mr. Ahmadinejad signed off on this?

The Islamic Resistance Movement believes that the land of Palestine is an Islamic Waqf consecrated for future Moslem generations until Judgement Day. It, or any part of it, should not be squandered: it, or any part of it, should not be given up. Neither a single Arab country nor all Arab countries, neither any king or president, nor all the kings and presidents, neither any organization nor all of them, be they Palestinian or Arab, possess the right to do that. Palestine is an Islamic Waqf land consecrated for Moslem generations until Judgement Day. This being so, who could claim to have the right to represent Moslem generations till Judgement Day?
This is the law governing the land of Palestine in the Islamic Sharia (law) and the same goes for any land the Moslems have conquered by force, because during the times of (Islamic) conquests, the Moslems consecrated these lands to Moslem generations till the Day of Judgement.

The Islamic Resistance Movement is a humanistic movement. It takes care of human rights and is guided by Islamic tolerance when dealing with the followers of other religions. Under the wing of Islam, it is possible for the followers of the three religions - Islam, Christianity and Judaism - to coexist in peace and quiet with each other. Peace and quiet would not be possible except under the wing of Islam. Past and present history are the best witness to that.
It is the duty of the followers of other religions to stop disputing the sovereignty of Islam in this region, because the day these followers should take over there will be nothing but carnage, displacement and terror. Everyone of them is at variance with his fellow-religionists, not to speak about followers of other religionists. Past and present history are full of examples to prove this fact.

Leaving the circle of struggle with Zionism is high treason, and cursed be he who does that. "for whoso shall turn his back unto them on that day, unless he turneth aside to fight, or retreateth to another party of the faithful, shall draw on himself the indignation of Allah, and his abode shall be hell; an ill journey shall it be thither." (The Spoils - verse 16). There is no way out except by concentrating all powers and energies to face this Nazi, vicious Tatar invasion. The alternative is loss of one's country, the dispersion of citizens, the spread of vice on earth and the destruction of religious values. Let every person know that he is responsible before Allah, for "the doer of the slightest good deed is rewarded in like, and the does of the slightest evil deed is also rewarded in like."
The Islamic Resistance Movement consider itself to be the spearhead of the circle of struggle with world Zionism and a step on the road. The Movement adds its efforts to the efforts of all those who are active in the Palestinian arena. Arab and Islamic Peoples should augment by further steps on their part; Islamic groupings all over the Arab world should also do the same, since all of these are the best-equipped for the future role in the fight with the warmongering Jews.
